Please don’t let The Sun King down
After all, parquet began in the late 1600s at Louis the Fourteenth’s magnificent palace at Versailles. Creating a floor from wooden blocks using geometric patterns and grain for contrast led to the most impressive of all floor surfaces...
And the least impressive is an old, tired and worn parquet floor!
If this applies to your own floors, pay some respect to 17th century Gallic ingenuity by calling in the experts in floor sanding and restoration:
Sanding Parquet Flooring Co
It may appear a complicated job yet working on parquet is much the same as with conventional floorboards -
and with even more magnificent results!
So why choose us?
The fruit of long experience
We’ve dealt with all kind of floors, from every level of condition. And of any age. Some have been probably far worse than yours.
And worked in every setting: both domestic and commercial - for over twenty years.
Parquet is still to be found in many properties, particularly from the 1930s to the 1970s when mass production of blocks made it a popular and affordable choice.
These include offices, shops, bars, pubs, cafes and restaurants
Or to welcome the public in galleries and museums
Or the eager feet of users in schools, gyms and sports halls.
Friendly and reliable
Our team are experts at assessing and sanding floors - all trained to the exacting standards of the National Wood Floor Association (NWFA). Some have been with us since we began!
No wonder we provide the complete floor sanding service
Geared to your needs:
We’ll assess your floor and give a complete appraisal of its condition and how we will bring it back to life.
All depending on the kind of floor you want: a surface to impress with its beauty or one to withstand heavy wear.
To help you make your choice, we’ll give you a demonstration of the qualities of the wide variety of stains and sealants.
And we’ll itemise each stage of the restoration process so that you can choose the package to suit your requirements.
The sanding processSanding strips away the old unwanted layers of paint, varnish or sealant to leave a fresh, bare, level surface.
Noisy, messy and deceptive - with dust everywhere..?
That was true of the past but not the way we work today!
Wood floor restoration involves a degree of convenience but we’ll make things easy for you.
The first steps
All furniture has to be moved away. We can shift those heavy items - and dispose of unwanted carpets and floor coverings.
A tight domestic or business schedule?
Then talk to us about our flexible working. At weekends - or even overnight - for a speedy job to make sure any loss of business is minimal.
As for dust, modern sanding is 99% dust free.
We’ll seal all doors and windows and our efficient cylinder machines trap the dust by having bags outside each room.
The work itself
We secure any loose blocks and create a level underfloor.
The next step is to fill in damaged or missing areas with blocks to match. These may be from an adjacent room that is not being sanded.
Parquet blocks come in a wide variety shapes and sizes. We can find those to fit from our sources of reclaimed material. If necessary, we can even cut them down to size.
Any gaps can be filled with a mixture of wood dust and resin.
Old features such as fireplaces and hearths don’t have to stay. We’ll take them out and cover the space with fresh blocks.
Sanding away
Sanding usually requires three stages using different grades of paper: a rough sand to strip off the old sealant; medium to create a level surface; and a fine sand for a smooth finish.
We use handheld machines and sometimes hand sanding for awkward corners and floor shapes.
A new look?
A change of colour to match or contrast with your decor?
After levelling and sanding the floor, the smooth surface is ready for staining. Coloured waxes, oils and lacquers are not a good idea, as the colour fades when the floor begins to wear. We recommend performing staining and sealing in two distinct stages. The colour is not only easier to control during application butholds fast as the layers of sealant we
ar away.
A clear stain enhances the natural grain of the wood: a coloured one gives depth and scope for design.
Final protection
The essential sealing of the timber provides a protective covering to prolong both the durability and good looks of your floor.
There are three main sealants:
Natural oil: for the traditional classy look of a wooden floor
Hardwax oil; penetrates the wood for a non glossy look, offering harder wear
Both oil and hardwax emphasise the natural grain of the wood - bringing out its inherent colour.
Lacquer for the busiest areas. Modern lacquers have a natural look, are water-based and completely safe in areas used by children and pets.
And we only use stains and sealants of the highest quality. Your valuable floor will endure and keep its looks for longer. For such an important job, they are the best long-term investment.
Your floor may require several coats and adequate drying time. The results will speak for themselves.
After-care
Your new surface will stay good for longer with a modest amoun9t of effort. Ask for our advice on the after-care your chosen sealants require.
Your restored parquet floor is easy to maintain. Regular sweeping and/or vacuuming will remove dirt and grit.
Avoid using revolving vacuum cleaner brushes - and excess moisture. A damp mop will suffice, with use of a wooden floor cleaner, as recommended by the manufacturer.
When the floor loses its lustre, a light re-oiling will bring it back to its best. For laquer, apply a ‘revive’ coat, after a light sanding-down of the original surface.
